The federal government remains on an unsustainable fiscal path, but recent trends show some improvement in both revenue and spending. Higher tariffs and a more stable tax code have lifted federal receipts, while outlays have stayed nearly flat despite rising interest costs and entitlement pressures.
That combination has helped narrow the deficit from last year’s levels, which may be one reason investors are finding support for equities. Even so, some of the progress may prove temporary if tariff refunds rise or new spending needs emerge.
The bigger picture is unchanged: deficits remain large, debt keeps climbing, and long-term fiscal discipline still depends on Congress acting with greater resolve. For investors, the near-term backdrop looks somewhat better than headlines suggest, but policy risk remains a key issue to watch.
