US equities are entering 2026 with strong earnings expectations, but the quality of that growth is under scrutiny. Much of the projected upside for the S&P 500 appears to come from higher profit margins rather than broad-based revenue gains, which raises questions about how durable those profits may be.
That matters because margin expansion can be powerful, but it is often less repeatable than demand-led revenue growth. History shows that periods of peak margins have often been followed by slower earnings progress as competition and normalization take hold.
The opportunity for investors lies in identifying businesses with real pricing power, recurring demand and disciplined reinvestment. In a market where a few large AI-linked names are carrying much of the index’s strength, selectivity becomes especially important. The key risk is paying premium valuations for earnings growth that depends too heavily on margins staying near record levels.
