Physical climate risks are now actively impacting companies' financial results, no longer a distant concern. Our analysis of earnings calls reveals that utilities and other asset-heavy sectors most frequently link these hazards to revenue and operating expenses. Less capital-intensive firms, however, often cite impacts on sales and pricing.
The specific risks and their financial consequences vary significantly by region. North America sees frequent mentions of windstorms and wildfires, while precipitation and drought are more prominent in Asia and Latin America. Insurance companies are a notable exception, discussing physical risks primarily through claims and catastrophe losses.
We found that companies are discussing current financial impacts, not just long-term expectations. Future research should focus on quantifying these impacts and integrating this information into portfolio management and security selection. The magnitude of these effects and how to precisely attribute them remain areas for deeper investigation.
