Emerging markets (EMs) have fundamentally improved, shifting from inherently risky to a more dynamic and potentially diversified asset class. This is driven by stronger monetary policy frameworks, deeper local debt markets, and robust reserve buffers, decoupling them from US dollar constraints.
This evolution presents a compelling case for re-evaluation, as many EMs now exhibit stronger macro fundamentals than developed markets, which face fiscal deficits and inflation concerns. While divergence remains, countries like India and China offer distinct growth stories, and others are undergoing positive structural change. The corporate landscape also shows healthier balance sheets and rising earnings, particularly in tech and AI-related sectors.
The opportunity set has broadened significantly in both equity and fixed income. EM debt, with its low correlation to major asset classes, offers diversification benefits. EM equities, trading at a discount to developed markets, present opportunities for alpha due to under-research and mispricing, especially with a focus on unconstrained investing to capture diverse growth themes beyond benchmarks.
