DC plan participants are increasingly confident in their savings but remain highly uncertain about generating sustainable lifetime income. A significant 66% believe they can withdraw 7% or more from their nest egg annually, a rate far exceeding industry consensus and risking depletion. This highlights a persistent knowledge gap regarding safe withdrawal rates, even as savings confidence has modestly improved.
Crucially, participants strongly desire automatic lifetime income solutions that still offer access to principal and market growth potential. Ninety-five percent favor this approach, valuing simplicity and control over a higher, but less flexible, guaranteed payout. This points to a clear opportunity for plan sponsors to evolve DC plans by integrating automated income features, mirroring the success of auto-enrollment.
The next step for plan sponsors is to design for simplicity and automation in retirement income. This addresses participant demand for ease of management and investment stability. What remains to be seen is how quickly plan designs will adapt to this clear preference for automatic, yet flexible, income generation.
